PTH sings & speaks out with Crystal Waters!, and rep's in New York Times and on GRITtv again
Submitted by admin on Tue, 01/19/2010 - 18:06.
Picture the Homeless members have spent the past few days on events and activities supporting the people of Haiti and celebrating the legacy of Dr. King, and we're looking forward to continuing to build on this. Also, PTH's Rob Robinson appeared again on the program GRITtv, in a roundtable on "a vision for social housing."
On January 16, PTH members joined the great house music singer Crystal Waters (!), Council Member Letitia James, Senator Velmanette Montgomery, and our pals from FUREE at the Brooklyn institution Freddy's Bar -- to speak out against the closing of a Brooklyn family shelter on Dr. King's birthday -- a closing pushed by the Barclays & Ratner developers, in order to turn the property into future stadium parking. Checkout video of us singing along with Crystal Waters' live performance of her hit "Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)" [thanks to Freddy's] -- and checkout these photos from Tracy Collins. And checkout the New York Times coverage:
Maria Walles, a member of Picture the Homeless, said she is now living in a couples’ shelter in Brooklyn, but has stayed in shelters throughout the city. She said moving between shelters is psychologically draining and it hurts to see families forced to relocate. Ms. Walles, along with many others at the protest on Saturday, was especially disappointed to see this happen so close to Monday’s holiday. “I wish Martin Luther King was here, because he would not tolerate this,” she said.
