On January 26, 2012, Bronx teenager Jateik Reed was attacked and brutally beaten by Officers from the New York City Police Department’s 42nd Precinct. Video of some of the arrest – which can be seen here -http://www.worldstarhiphop. Also on January 26, 2012, Shortly after Jateik’s beating and arrest, his mother, Schuan Reed, went to the 42ndPrecinct to find Jateik. With her were her two other sons, Jashawn Walker, 16, and Jayaire Reed, 4, and a family friend, William Reid, 18. As they were at the Precinct, Jateik was being further assaulted by NYPD. Police supervisors directed Ms. Reed to speak with one of the officers who had just been beating her son; and none would give her information about his medical state or anything else. Though neither Ms. Reed, nor either of her sons, nor Mr. Reid engaged in any unlawful behavior, all but four-year-old Jayaire were then violently arrested outside of the 42nd Precinct. The criminal court complaint swears that, while inside the precinct, Ms. Reed “screamed in sum and substance ‘I want answers’” and that after being “asked to leave” Mr. Walker said “I’m not leaving you’ll have to lock me up before you bring me out of here.” Then, according to the police account, the officers “approached” Mr. Walker “to remove him” from the precinct, when Ms. Reed allegedly “tried to pull” an officer “off of” her son Jashawn, as another officer allegedly “attempted to remove” Mr. Walker’s hands from the first officer. At the same time, according to the police, Mr. Reid allegedly “jumped on [an officer’s] back and started to swing closed fists toward [another officer] while stating “Get off my mother.” (Ms. Reed is not Mr. Reid’s mother). All three then allegedly “flailed their arms and kicked their legs” in the process of being handcuffed, the police swear. In reality, the three were arrested outside of the 42nd Precinct, not inside; and none acted in a criminally disorderly way or resisted arrest orobstructed governmental administration. In fact, they were attacked by officers working closely with, and in some cases under the supervision of, the very ones who had just beaten Jateik. Among other things, NYPD officers slapped Ms. Reed in the face and threw her into stairs, and threw Jashawn onto the ground, twisted his arm, and punched him. Ms. Reed, Mr. Walker, and Mr. Reid were all fully booked and processed and charged with Resisting Arrest, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Obstructing Governmental Administration in the Second Degree, and Disorderly Conduct – three crimes and a violation.
